6 Common Causes of Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure is a common plumbing problem that can affect various plumbing fixtures. This problem can turn simple tasks such as washing dishes and bathing into hassles.

In this article, we will look at the possible causes of low water pressure so that you know what to do in case you experience the problem.

Malfunctioning Pressure Regulator

Some plumbing systems have pressure regulators that help to maintain constant water pressure, ensuring it's not too high or too low. Like other plumbing fixtures, pressure regulators can malfunction and cause water pressure problems. If you suspect that a failing pressure regulator may be the cause of low water pressure, call a plumber to inspect the valve.

Scale Buildup Due to Hard Water

Hard water contains a high amount of minerals that can cause scale buildup in your pipes, thereby restricting the water flow as there’s less space for water to travel through. If there’s scale buildup in your pipes, it’s advisable to have them replaced to prevent further problems down the line.

Clogged Pipes

A clog somewhere in your pipes can interfere with water pressure. It may be caused by tree roots, mineral buildup, or pipe damage. If you’re having low water pressure accompanied with gurgling noises, there could be a clog in your pipes that’s causing the problem. A leak anywhere in your pipes can also keep water from reaching your faucets, leading to low water pressure.

Corroded Pipes

Over time, your plumbing pipes can become corroded and restrict water flow, leading to low water pressure. The possibility of corrosion increases if you have older galvanized steel pipes. Acidic water can also accelerate pipe corrosion. If you notice brownish-looking water flowing out of your pipes or the water has a strange metallic taste, your pipes are probably corroded.

A Municipal Water Problem

Sometimes low water pressure may stem from issues to do with the municipal water supply. Before you schedule plumbing repair, check with your neighbors to see if they’re experiencing a similar problem. If your neighbors are also experiencing low water pressure, call your water distributor to find out if they’re aware of the problem and when it’s expected to be fixed.

Partially Closed Water Valves

Most homes have a water meter valve and a main shutoff valve. If either is these valves is partially closed, you'll experience low water pressure. If the low water pressure is restricted to only one faucet or showerhead, you may be dealing with a fixture problem. You'll need to call a plumber to check the fixture and make the necessary repairs.
